Genre: Mystery

Medical Mystery 2008 Challenge #2

Dr. Peter Zak is a psychologist who works at The Pearce Psychiatric Center. He is the one who discovers the body of one his colleagues and her troubled teenage daughter holding the gun. His efforts to help the daughter and to find the truth about his friend’s death are an interesting and quick read. This second in the series definitely held my attention and kept me turning the pages. A few of my guesses as I was reading turned out to be correct, but a few ended up being red herrings.

I enjoy this psychological thriller type of book. G.H. Ephron is actually the team of Hallie Ephron and Dr. Donald Davidoff. I’ll be continuing with this series. The recurring characters and their struggles with their own issues takes a bit of a back seat to the current mystery in this one, but the continuation of their stories is well done along the way.

YAY another good Ephron! :) I have even started this challenge yet. :(

Joy 7/08/2008 6:58 AM

Oops! That would be - haven't.

Nicola 7/08/2008 8:02 AM

Sounds like a good series! Just what a need, to start another series :0

Bookfool 7/08/2008 8:06 AM

That sounds excellent, but of course I have to ask you if you think it's low enough on gore.

SuziQoregon 7/09/2008 2:40 PM

Joy - I hope you like it too.

Nicola - I have so many series going right now. I think next year I'm going to focus less on challenges and more on the series I've partially read.

Bookfool - it's more of a psychological thriller than blood and guts.

Joy 7/09/2008 4:19 PM

Oh my gosh! I just lost my post. How does that happen anyway!?!

What I said was...funny you should mention that to Nicola. After I host one more challenge this year, I am giving up challenges for 2009. There are a few that I'm participating in now that go into 2009, but hopefully I'll finish those sooner rather than later. I plan on focusing on books that I didn't read from challenge lists, series and whimpulse reads. I have loved doing all the challenges, but I want to be a free-spirit. :) I plan on announcing this on my blogiversary, which is on the 16th. I don't know how long you started before I did, but isn't yours around now, too?

SuziQoregon 7/09/2008 5:22 PM

Joy: thanks for the reminder - last year I didn't even think about my blogging anniversary till you posted about yours.

I don't think I'll give up challenges completely - just be much pickier. Obviously the TBR fits in with continuing my series books - I'll probably pick the next in a bunch of series for that one. There are a few favorites that I'll do again if they're offered in 2009, but only a select few.

I hope that the 'one more' you'll host is the 2nds - I've already planned my books for it :-)

Hallie Ephron 7/10/2008 2:12 PM

Hey, Suzi -- Thanks for the kind mention! Addiction was #2 in the series, so you've got 4 more to go.

Don and I wrote the last Peter Zak mystery in 2005 ("Guilt") and at last I have a new mystery (actually it's more psychological suspense)coming out in January '09 from HarperCollins: "Never Tell a Lie."

And since you love books, you might want to look at "1001 Books for Every Mood." I'm giving away a signed copy of it to anyone who writes a reader's guide for my web site for one of the books in it. (HINT: "Water for Elephants" and "Harriet the Spy" are two of the books in your blog that are among my 1001 and don't already have readers guides...just for example.)

From Hallie Ephron (who loves not camping, too)

SuziQoregon 7/11/2008 12:16 PM

Hallie - thank you so much for stopping by. It's always nice to have authors visit my blog (particularly when I like their work). I'm looking forward to continuing with the Peter Zak series.

I did see "1001 Books for Every Mood" on your website last week. Looks great and I'll have to check it out.

I do have to say that I'm very pleased to hear that you've got another psychological suspense book coming out soon. I'll be watching for that one.

Thanks again! (and thanks for the support on the not camping thing too)

Framed 7/12/2008 6:02 AM

I've read Amnesia in this series and really liked it. It's probably smack in the middle but I'm going to try to get to the others. Thanks for your review.

SuziQoregon 7/13/2008 4:40 PM

Framed: Amnesia was the first in the series, this is the second.
